History

Elise Lipkowitz received her graduate training at Stanford University (MA, 2000) and Northwestern University (Ph.D., 2009), where she specialized in European History (1500-present) and the History of Science. Her research program focuses on the interactions between science and politics. She is currently working on a book manuscript, tentatively titled Conflict in the Age of Cosmopolitan Science: The Transformation of the European Scientific Community in the Era of the French Revolution, which investigates the effects of war, nationalism, and national interest on knowledge exchange and the cultural practices of European scientists during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.

Elise teaches courses in the History Department on Atlantic Revolutions and the Origins of Modern Science. A former chair of the American Historical Association’s Graduate and Early Career Committee, Elise is also the editor of From Concept to Completion: A Dissertation Writing Guide for History Students (AHA Publications, 2008).
